Мексика дала имя Жака Ива Кусто одному из своих островов

Расположенный в Калифорнийском заливе (в Мексике его называют морем Кортеса) остров Серральво переименован Мексикой в честь знаменитого французского океанографа Жака Кусто. С предложением о переименовании выступила в феврале Морская ассоциация этой страны. Французский исследователь морских глубин удостоен этой чести за большой вклад в изучение вод залива, сообщает РИА "Новости". Жак Ив Кусто называл море Кортеса "всемирным аквариумом" за то, что здесь сосредоточено более 40% видов рыб и морских млекопитающих, обитающих в Мировом океане. Море Кортеса - самое молодое море мира, образовавшееся 15 миллионов лет назад в результате разлома земной коры. Сотни миль горной береговой линии, богатая дикая природа, острова в кристально чистых водах привлекают большое внимание туристов. С середины января до середины марта сотни серых китов приплывают сюда с Аляски для брачных игр и выведения потомства. Решением ЮНЕСКО в 2005 году 244 острова моря Кортеса внесены в перечень объектов Всемирного наследия.
